Instead of the originally scheduled 3:30 p.m. start, the puck will drop at 4:30 p.m. in South Bend. With a high of 46 degrees and projected sunny conditions, the game was moved back to protect the safety of the players, according to a Notre Dame news release.
Notre Dame Stadium hosted the 2019 Winter Classic between the Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins on Tuesday, and there were no reported issues with the ice. The temperature was 35 degrees at puck drop.
Saturday will be the Irish’s third outdoor game in the modern era and first at Notre Dame Stadium. They beat Miami (Ohio) 2-1 on Feb. 17, 2013 at Soldier Field in Chicago, while losing to Boston College 4-3 on Jan. 4, 2014 at Fenway Park in Boston.
Michigan will be playing in its eighth outdoor game of the modern era and first since Feb. 7, 2015 at Soldier Field. The Wolverines hold a 3-3-1 record outdoors.
