14 Wolverines receive B1G conference honors

The season may not have ended on the best of notes but the Wolverines still have a lot to be proud of. This holds true with the unveiling of the B1G conference honors given out today. In total, 14 Michigan players received recognition led by Defensive Player of the Year Devin Bush.

Several other members of the Wolverine defense also made the All-Big Ten Defensive teams.

The awards were capped off by Donovan Peoples-Jones making the All-B1G Special Team and Will Hart being name B1G punter of the year.

The most interesting part of these results will be what players end up coming back for next year. Stand-out corners David Long and Lavert Hill will certainly be among the Michigan starters that have big decisions to make to return to Ann Arbor or head into the NFL draft. One thing the Michigan coaching staff did get right all year was getting playing time for some of the younger Wolverines. Players such as Josh Uche, Josh Ross, and Kwitty Paye were able to play alongside the likes of Chase Winovich, Rashan Gary, and Devin Bush all season, and that experience will be invaluable in 2019.

Rashan Gary‘s mother Jennifer Coney-Shepherd called into the “Big Drew & Jim” on ESPN 96.1FM Grand Rapids to defend her son after the hosts raised the question of whether or not Rashan Gary is overrated.

The radio show hosts questioned why Gary had a disappointing performance against Ohio State last Saturday and why his play this season hasn’t been at the same level it was last year.

Coney-Shepherd responded by explaining the role that Rashan Gary and Chase Winovich play in Don Brown‘s defense. She went on to make the argument that Gary’s job isn’t to get sacks, his job is to anchor the defense. Jennifer successfully pointed out that Winovich didn’t have a sack while filling in for Gary during his injury.
